How do Governing Bodies work?

The Local Governing Body (LGB) at Saint Mary’s, New Mills is made up of four foundation Governors, who are appointed by the Diocese of Nottingham, and two Parent Governors, who are chosen by the parents.  Each governor is active in the community, brings particular skills to their role, and offers their service on a voluntary basis.  The LGB meets twice a term.  When face to face meetings were not possible, owing to covid restrictions, meetings were held over MS Teams, in order to maintain a continuity of support for our children and staff.  Each governor takes on at least one ‘link governor’ role in Special Educational Needs, Pupil Premium, Safeguarding, Anti-Bullying, Data Protection and is offered regular training to ensure they are up to date with developments in their focus area.  Our school is a part of the Saint Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust; with the LGB acting as a link between the Trust, the school and the local community.  Foremost amongst the responsibilities of the LGB are

  • Ensuring the Catholic ethos of the school.
  • Monitoring the School Development Plan.
  • Supporting and challenging the Headteacher.
  • Developing and monitoring relationships with staff, parents, parish and local community.
  • Ensuring the safeguarding of pupils and staff.

Governors fulfil their monitoring responsibilities by regular visits to school for learning walks, book scrutinies and pupil voice interviews.  If you would like to find out more about the role of your LGB, or offer your services as a governor, feel free to contact the school.
